Most surf trips to Morocco need less luggage than you think. Boards, wetsuits and towels are often provided, and the weather is kind. The key is bringing the right few things: good sun protection, layers for cool evenings, and some cash.

Surf gear

  • Swimwear: at least two sets, so one can dry.
  • Rash vest or surf leggings: useful against the sun and board rash.
  • Wetsuit: usually provided with lessons. If you bring your own, a 4/3 mm for winter and a 3/2 mm for summer.
  • Reef booties: only needed for rocky point breaks.
  • Surfboard: only if you are experienced. Rentals are easy.
  • Wax: available locally, but bring your favourite if you are picky.

Sun protection

The Moroccan sun is strong, and reflected light from the water doubles the effect. Many first-timers burn on day one and lose valuable surf time.

  • Water-resistant, high-SPF sunscreen, preferably reef-friendly
  • A zinc stick for your face and nose
  • Sunglasses and a hat for the beach
  • After-sun or aloe vera

Clothes

October to April

  • T-shirts and shorts for the day
  • A warm jumper or fleece and long trousers for the evening
  • A light waterproof jacket

May to September

  • Light, breathable clothes
  • One layer for windy evenings

In villages and towns, clothes that cover shoulders and knees are respectful and also protect you from the sun. On the beach and at the camp, normal surf and swimwear is completely fine.

Documents and money

  • Passport: check that it is valid for at least six months. Many nationalities can visit Morocco visa-free for short stays, but always check the latest rules for your country.
  • Travel insurance that covers surfing.
  • Cash: the Moroccan dirham (MAD). Bring some euros to exchange, or withdraw from cash machines in Agadir, Aourir or Taghazout.
  • A card for bigger payments, where accepted.

Health and small essentials

  • Plasters and antiseptic for small cuts from fins or rocks
  • Painkillers and any personal medication
  • Earplugs, useful for light sleepers and for surfers prone to ear problems
  • A reusable water bottle
  • A power adapter (Morocco uses type C and E plugs, 220 V)

What you can leave at home

  • Towels and bed linen, usually provided
  • Boards and wetsuits if you are taking lessons
  • Smart clothes. Surf villages are relaxed.

What should women wear in Morocco?

On the beach and at surf camps, normal swimwear and surf gear are fine. In villages and towns, clothes that cover shoulders and knees are respectful and practical against the sun.
