Beginner Surfing Tutorial: Paddling a Surfboard
Master paddling with our surfing tutorial for beginners. Learn body position, technique, and timing to catch your first waves in Tamraght, Morocco.

If you are looking for a surfing tutorial for beginners, paddling is exactly where we start. Most people think surfing is all about standing up, but the truth is you spend ninety percent of your time lying flat on your board, moving through the water. Good paddling technique is what actually gets you into the wave. Without it, you will struggle to catch anything. Whether you are joining us in Tamraght for the winter swell season or just starting out during the calmer summer months, mastering your paddle is the foundation of everything else.
Why Paddling Is the Most Important Surf Skill to Master First
When you watch experienced surfers, they make it look effortless. That is because they have built up specific muscles and a smooth rhythm over time. For a beginner, poor paddling leads to exhaustion and frustration. If you cannot paddle efficiently, you will not generate enough speed to match the speed of an incoming wave. You will also waste valuable energy just trying to get out past the break. By focusing on your paddle technique right from day one, you conserve energy, stay out longer, and give yourself the best chance to actually catch that white water wave and stand up.
Correct Body Position on the Board for Efficient Paddling
Your body position dictates how your surfboard moves through the water. If you are too far forward, the nose of the board will dive underwater, creating drag and eventually flipping you off. If you are too far back, the tail sinks, and you will feel like you are paddling a heavy brick.
To find the sweet spot:
- Lie flat on your stomach with your feet together and relaxed
- Keep your chin up and look straight ahead toward the horizon
- Position your chest slightly above the center point of the board
- Keep your legs straight but let them rest naturally
- Adjust your body an inch at a time until the nose sits just above the water

Step-by-Step Paddling Technique: Cupped Hands, Relaxed Elbows, Steady Rhythm
Once you are balanced, it is time to move. The biggest mistake beginners make is splashing. Splashing means your energy is going up into the air instead of pushing you forward.
- Keep your fingers slightly cupped, not tightly squeezed together
- Reach forward smoothly, entering the water fingertips first
- Pull the water beneath and alongside the rail of the board
- Keep your elbows slightly bent and relaxed to avoid shoulder strain
- Maintain a steady, alternating rhythm rather than rushing
Think of it as a calm, continuous rotation. You want long, deep strokes that quietly propel you forward. If you want to see how the local conditions might affect your paddle out, check our Live surf report.
Catching Your First White Water Waves: Timing and Pop-Up Tips
Now that you can paddle, you need to catch a wave. For your first sessions, we always start in the white water, the already broken foam. This is the safest and most forgiving part of the wave.
When you see a wall of white foam approaching, point the nose of your board toward the beach. Wait until the wave is about two meters behind you, then start paddling hard. Do not stop when you feel the wave hit your tail. Keep paddling until you feel the board accelerate on its own. Only then should you place your hands flat on the deck near your chest and execute your pop-up. For a deeper dive into the whole process, read our guide on the Surf Camp in Morocco for Beginners.
Building Paddling Endurance for Winter Swell Season in Morocco
The Atlantic coast of Morocco comes alive from September to April. The winter swell season brings consistent, beautiful waves, but it also means you need stamina. Paddling against a current or pushing through larger sets requires endurance.
You can start building this strength before you even arrive. Swimming laps, doing push-ups, and practicing planks are excellent ways to prepare your shoulders and core. Once you are here in Tamraght, our local instructors will guide you through small-group lessons, helping you refine your technique daily.
