Surfing in Morocco in March: What to Expect at Banana Point and Beyond

If you are thinking about surfing in Morocco March is one of the best months you could pick. The winter swell season is still pumping solid Atlantic swells down the coast, the weather is warming up nicely, and the crowds of midwinter start to thin out just a little. We see consistent waves almost every day at our home breaks near Tamraght, and the whole coast from Agadir to Imsouane turns on. March gives you that sweet spot where the ocean still holds serious energy but the days feel pleasant enough to surf without freezing. Why March Is Peak Season on the Coast The Atlantic swell season runs from September to April, and March sits right in the middle of the strongest months. Storms out in the Atlantic send long-period groundswells that hit the Moroccan coast with real power. You can expect swell heights regularly in the 4 to 8 foot range, with clean offshore winds common in the mornings when the land is cooler than the sea. By March the winter storms have settled into a reliable pattern. You get glassy dawn sessions more often than not. The wind typically picks up around midday, so early starts are the way to go. We always tell our guests to be in the water by 7:30 or 8:00 am to get the best conditions before the afternoon onshore breeze kicks in. Another reason March works so well is the daylight. You have enough light for two proper sessions a day without rushing. Surf in the morning, eat a long lunch on the rooftop, then paddle back out as the wind drops near sunset. Wave Conditions and Best Surf Spots by Level March swells mean different spots light up depending on your level. Here is how we break it down for guests staying with us in Tamraght. For beginners and improvers, the beach breaks at Tamraght and Panoramas handle the swell well. The waves are punchy but manageable, and the sandy bottom means forgiving wipeouts. Our surf lessons in Tamraght run every morning, and by March most beginners are catching green waves by day three. For intermediates, Devil's Rock and Crocro are excellent. Both spots hold size well and offer long, workable walls. On a solid 6-foot March day, Devil's Rock can produce rides of 150 meters or more. For advanced surfers, March is when Banana Point really shines. This right-hand point break sits about 10 minutes north of Tamraght and needs a solid swell to break properly. When March delivers a 6-foot northwest swell with light east wind, Banana Point produces one of the best right-handers in Morocco. Anchor Point and Killer Point further north near Taghazout also fire in March. Anchor on a good day can run for 300 meters plus. Just know that these spots get crowded when the swell drops below 5 feet, so pick your sessions. Banana Point on a good March swell: long, fast and glassy before the wind picks up. Water Temperature, Air Temperature and Wetsuit Advice The ocean around Tamraght in March sits at roughly 16 to 18 degrees Celsius. That is cool enough that you need a wetsuit but warm enough that you will not freeze after a two-hour session. Here is what we recommend: A 3/2mm wetsuit for most people, sealed seams if you have themA 4/3mm if you feel the cold easily or plan longer sessionsBooties are not necessary, the water is fine for bare feetNo hood or gloves needed Air temperatures in March range from 14 degrees at night to around 24 degrees during the day. It is t-shirt weather in the afternoon but you will want a light jacket for early morning surf checks. The sun is strong by March, so reef-safe sunscreen is a must. What to Pack and How to Plan from Tamraght Packing for a March surf trip is straightforward. Bring two wetsuits if you can, so one can dry while you wear the other. A good surf poncho or changing mat makes the early morning sessions much easier on the rocky shoreline at some spots. Pack layers for the variable mornings and warm afternoons. From Tamraght, everything on the coast is within easy reach. Banana Point is a short drive north. Anchor Point and the Taghazout breaks are 10 to 15 minutes away. Imsouane is about 90 minutes north and worth the trip on a smaller swell day. We arrange day trips to Imsouane for €40 per person. 🌊 October in Tamraght & Taghazout — Good Month for Remote Work?

Thinking about spending October working remotely from Tamraght or Taghazout? 💻🌴

October is when the coast starts to feel a little different.

The summer heat eases off, the days are still warm and comfortable, and the Atlantic starts becoming more interesting for surfers. Around Agadir, October daytime temperatures are generally in the mid-to-high 20s °C, while evenings can feel noticeably cooler. Rain is still relatively limited, although the chance of rainy days gradually increases toward the end of the month.

For people working online, that can mean a pretty nice daily rhythm:

💻 Morning: coffee + a few hours of focused work
🏄 Midday: surf, walk, or explore the coast
🌅 Afternoon: back to work or enjoy the sunset
🌙 Evening: cooler air, dinner and a relaxed night

And if you're here for surfing, October is when things start getting more interesting around Tamraght & Taghazout, with autumn swell beginning to build.
