A surfer riding a clean winter wave near Taghazout, Morocco

If you are looking into surf Morocco January conditions, you will be happy to know that January is right in the middle of the peak season. The Atlantic coast around Taghazout and Tamraght receives consistent groundswells, the air is mild under the winter sun, and the water is cool but very manageable with a standard 4/3 wetsuit. It is one of the best months for surfers of all levels to visit.

Why January is peak surf season in Morocco

From September to April, the northern hemisphere winter sends long-period swells straight to the Moroccan coast. January stands out because the swells are highly consistent, yet the weather remains pleasant compared to the freezing winter back home.

You can expect sunny days, offshore winds in the morning, and uncrowded lineups if you know where to go. The water temperature sits around 16 to 18 degrees Celsius. It is refreshing, but a good wetsuit keeps you warm during a two-hour session.

Because the coast faces northwest, it picks up almost every swell direction. This means you rarely have a flat day. Whether you are a beginner learning to pop up or an advanced surfer looking for long walls, January delivers.

Air and water temperature: what 4/3 wetsuit to pack

Many surfers ask us what to pack for winter on the Atlantic coast. The answer is simple: a 4/3mm wetsuit, booties if your feet get cold easily, and a light jacket for early mornings.

During the day, temperatures often reach 22 degrees Celsius under clear blue skies. You can comfortably surf in a 4/3 wetsuit, and many people even wear a 3/2mm on the warmer days. The sun is strong, so pack reef-safe sunscreen and a good hat for the beach.

At night, it cools down to around 10 degrees. Bringing layers is a smart move. A warm hoodie for evening rooftop sessions is essential. You do not need a thick 5/4mm winter suit unless you run very cold.

Sunlight hours, crowds and tips for planning your January surf trip

January offers around ten hours of daylight. The sun rises around 7:30 AM and sets near 6:00 PM. This gives you plenty of time for two surf sessions a day, with a long lunch break in between.

While Taghazout is popular in winter, the crowds are manageable if you time your sessions right. Surfing early in the morning guarantees offshore winds and empty peaks. By the time the wind turns onshore in the afternoon, you can explore the area or relax.

Here are a few practical tips for your January trip:

  • Book your accommodation and surf lessons in advance, as January is a busy month for surf camps.
  • Rent a board locally if you do not want to pay airline fees. We provide soft-top and hard boards for all levels.
  • Plan a rest day or a land activity. If your arms need a break, take a trip to Paradise Valley or visit the souks in Agadir.
