Essaouira Day Trip from Taghazout: Médina, Port and Kitesurf

Essaouira is a walled port town on the Atlantic, about two and a half to three hours north of Taghazout. Its médina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its fishing port is full of blue boats, and the strong trade winds have made it one of the best-known kitesurfing spots in Africa. It is the most popular full-day trip from the surf villages.
Getting there
The coastal road north passes Tamri, Imsouane’s turn-off and long stretches of argan forest. You may spot goats standing in argan trees along the way, a sight that has become famous (though some of these are staged for tourists).

A day in Essaouira
Morning: the port
Start at the fishing port, when the boats come in and the market is busiest. Walk along the harbour wall to the Sqala du Port, the old sea fortification, for views back over the ramparts and the blue boats.
Late morning: the médina
Essaouira’s médina is compact, calm and easy to walk. Its straight streets were laid out in the 18th century, which makes it much easier to navigate than larger médinas. Look out for the woodworkers making thuya wood boxes, the spice stalls, and the art galleries.
Lunch: fresh fish
Near the port, grill stalls let you choose fish and seafood from the day’s catch and have it cooked on the spot. Agree the price before they start cooking.
Afternoon: the ramparts and the beach
Walk the Sqala de la Kasbah, the ramparts lined with old cannons, then head to the long town beach. If the wind is up, you will see kitesurfers and windsurfers out on the bay.

- Carry cash: many small shops prefer dirhams.
- Bargain politely: it is expected in the souks, and a smile helps.
