Surfers walking on a sunny beach in Tamraght Morocco during winter

If you are looking for practical Morocco travel tips, you are in the right place. Morocco is a fantastic winter destination, especially the Atlantic coast. While Europe gets cold and grey, Tamraght stays mild and sunny. The water is fresh but manageable with a good wetsuit, and the waves are at their best from September to April. Whether you come for surf lessons or just to escape the winter, here is what you need to know before you fly.

Getting There and Around the Coast

Agadir Al Massira Airport (AGA) is the main gateway for the Taghazout and Tamraght area. It is about a 45-minute drive from our riad to the airport. Many airlines offer direct flights from major European cities, especially during the peak surf season. Once you land, the easiest way to reach the coast is by taxi. If you book a stay with us, airport and bus station transfers are included in our packages. This means you do not have to negotiate fares or figure out directions after a long flight. We pick you up and bring you straight to the beach vibe.

Money, Budget, and Cards

The local currency is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD). You can exchange money at the airport or withdraw cash from ATMs in Agadir and Tamraght. While cards are accepted in some hotels and larger restaurants, cash is still king in local shops, cafes, and surf shops. It is always a good idea to carry enough cash for small purchases, tips, and local souks. Prices on the coast are generally affordable. A fresh orange juice or a good Moroccan coffee costs just a fraction of what you would pay in Europe. If you want to know exactly what is included in your stay, check our Packages and prices.

Visa, Health, and Safety

For many nationalities, including European and North American, a visa is not required for stays up to 90 days. You just need a passport valid for at least six months. No special vaccinations are required for Morocco. However, it is recommended to drink bottled water rather than tap water during your stay. The Tamraght area is very safe and locals are incredibly welcoming. The community is used to international surfers, so you will feel at home quickly. If you ever need help, our team is always around to assist.

Winter Surf Conditions

Winter is the prime surf season on the Atlantic coast. This is the time when consistent swells arrive. Spots like Anchor Point and Killer Point turn on, offering long right-handers for advanced surfers. For beginners and intermediate surfers, beaches like Tamraght and Panoramas offer forgiving white water and mellow peaks. The water temperature in winter drops to around 16 to 18 degrees Celsius. A 3/2mm wetsuit is often enough, but a 4/3mm is safer if you get cold easily. All surf material, including wetsuits and boards, is included in our packages. You can check the Live surf report to see current conditions.

Local Culture and Etiquette

Morocco is a Muslim country, and the coast is quite relaxed. In Tamraght and Taghazout, surf culture blends naturally with local life. You can wear your swimsuit on the beach, but when walking through the village or going to a shop, it is respectful to cover up a bit. A t-shirt and shorts are perfectly fine. Bargaining is common in the souks. If you want to buy a rug or a souvenir, negotiate with a smile. It is part of the culture and should be fun, not stressful. If you want to explore the local markets, our team can guide you during the Souk El Had visit in Agadir.

What to Pack for a Winter Surf Trip

Packing for Morocco in winter is simple. You do not need thick winter clothes, but layers are key. The sun is strong during the day, but evenings can be cool.
– Swimwear and a towel for the beach
– A 3/2mm or 4/3mm wetsuit if you have your own
– A warm hoodie or jacket for evenings on the rooftop
– Sunscreen and zinc for long sessions in the water
– A reusable water bottle
– A light pair of shoes for walking on rocks at some surf spots

If you forget something, there are surf shops nearby where you can buy wax, boards, and accessories. You can also check our Rooms to see what is already provided at the riad.
