What is Paradise Valley?
Paradise Valley is a narrow gorge in the foothills of the Atlas, inland from the fishing town of Aourir, where a river has cut through the rock and left a string of natural pools between palm trees, oleander and red cliffs. After a few days of salt water, sunburn and paddling, it feels like a different country: green, shaded, quiet and fresh. You walk along a rocky path, stop wherever the water looks good, swim, jump if you dare, and sit in the shade with a mint tea before heading back to the coast.
We run our Paradise Valley day trip as a relaxed half day from our riad in Tamraght. It is one of the easiest ways to see a bit of Morocco beyond the beaches without spending hours in a car, and it is a favourite on flat days, rest days or the afternoon after a long surf. If you want the full background before you go, read our Paradise Valley guide.
What you will see and do
The road leaves the coast at Aourir and climbs slowly into the hills, past small Amazigh villages, argan trees and terraced fields. The last part of the drive follows the valley itself, and you start to see the palms along the riverbed. From the parking area, the walk to the main pools is short but uneven, over rocks and dry riverbed.
Here is how a typical half day looks:
- Morning pick-up at the riad. We leave from Surf Chill Vibe in the centre of Tamraght after breakfast, so there is no need to organise a taxi or find the road yourself.
- The drive into the hills. A scenic ride inland from Aourir, with a view that changes from ocean to mountain in a short time. Your guide from our team will tell you a bit about the villages and the argan along the way.
- The walk into the gorge. An easy hike on rocky paths between palm trees and cliffs, with stops for photos. Take your time: the rocks can be slippery near the water.
- Swimming in the pools. The middle of the trip is free time by the natural pools. Swim, float, sunbathe on the flat rocks, or watch the braver ones jump from the ledges into the deeper parts.
- Tea and back to the coast. Before leaving there is time for a drink or a snack in the valley, then we drive back to Tamraght, usually in time for lunch, an afternoon surf or a nap.

When to go
The valley is open all year, but it changes with the seasons. After a wet winter the river runs and the pools are full and clear. In a dry year, or at the end of a long summer, some pools can be low, so we always manage expectations honestly before we go. Spring and autumn are lovely: warm enough to swim, not too hot to walk. In summer it gets hot inland, which is exactly why we go in the morning.
What to wear and bring
Wear your swimsuit under your clothes and bring a towel. Good shoes with grip matter more than anything else: the rocks are smooth and the path is uneven, and flip-flops are a common reason for a twisted ankle. Add water, sunscreen and a hat, plus a little cash in dirhams for a drink or a snack in the valley. Paradise Valley is a rural area, so a T-shirt or light cover-up for the walk is respectful and also protects you from the sun.
Our tips for Paradise Valley
- Go early. Mornings mean fewer people, softer light for photos and cooler air for the walk.
- Check the depth before you jump. Water levels vary, and a pool that was deep last month may be shallow now. Ask your guide, and never jump without checking.
- Keep your phone dry. A small dry bag or a zip bag is useful if you plan to swim across to the rocks.
- Take your rubbish back. The valley is fragile and busy at weekends. Leave it as you found it.
- Pair it with a surf day. A morning in the valley and an evening session at Banana Point or on the Tamraght beach break is a very good day.
