What are the Aghroud dunes?
Aghroud is a stretch of coast just north of Taghazout where the land opens up into sand dunes and a wide, wild beach. From the top of the dunes you look straight out over the Atlantic, with the coast running north and the argan-covered hills behind you. It is a short drive from our riad in Tamraght, yet it feels far from the cafés and surf traffic of the village.
Our Aghroud dunes camel ride at sunset is a relaxed half day built around the best light of the day. You ride along the dunes as the sun goes down, then settle in for a glass of mint tea around a bonfire. It is a favourite with non-surfers, couples, families and anyone who wants a softer evening after a day in the water. What you will see and do
Camels move slowly, and that is the point. There is plenty of time to look around, take photos and enjoy the quiet. No experience is needed: the camel handlers help you on and off, and they lead the animals the whole way. Getting up and down is the funniest part, because camels stand back legs first, so hold on and lean back.
Here is how the evening usually goes:
- Late afternoon pick-up. We leave from Surf Chill Vibe in the centre of Tamraght and drive north along the coast road past Taghazout.
- Arrival at the dunes. A short walk on the sand, time to take in the view and meet the camels.
- Camel ride at sunset. About two hours across the dunes and along the ocean, timed so you are on the sand as the sun sinks into the sea.
- Tea by the bonfire. On our Morocco Discovery trip, the evening ends around a fire with sweet mint tea as the sky turns orange, then dark and full of stars.
- Back to the riad. A short drive home to Tamraght, in time for dinner.

When to go
The ride works all year, but the timing moves with the season because we follow the sunset. In winter we leave earlier in the afternoon; in summer later. Evenings on the coast can be breezy, and once the sun is gone the temperature drops fast, even after a warm day, so do not be fooled by the afternoon heat.
Is it right for you?
If you have never been on a camel, this is a gentle introduction: the pace is a slow walk and the handlers stay with the group. Children usually love it, and it is a good choice for anyone travelling with a partner or friend who does not surf. If you have back or knee problems, tell us before booking; the ride itself is calm, but getting on and off involves a bit of a lurch.
What to wear and bring
- A warm layer, such as a sweater or light jacket, for after sunset and the time by the fire.
- Closed shoes or sandals that are comfortable on sand.
- Your camera or phone, fully charged. The light at Aghroud is some of the best on this coast.
- Long trousers are more comfortable on the saddle than shorts.
Our tips for the Aghroud dunes
- Put your phone on a strap or in a zipped pocket. Dropping it from a camel into the sand is a classic.
- Ask for a photo from the ground. A shot of the whole caravan silhouetted against the sunset is the one everyone wants.
- Keep your sunglasses on. The wind can lift fine sand on the dunes.
- Combine it with a sandboarding day. If you like the dunes, try sandboarding in the Timlalin dunes further up the coast.
- Balance the sand with some green. A morning at Paradise Valley and an evening at Aghroud gives you two very different sides of the region.
