Surfing Mysteries: everything you need to know
The wave at Mysteries
Mysteries sits just beside Anchor Point, on the stretch of rocky coast at the northern end of Taghazout. It is a right-hander that breaks over a reef and rock bottom, facing west-south-west into the Atlantic. Where Anchor Point is famous for long, peeling walls, Mysteries is a shorter, punchier ride: you take off, make a couple of turns and the wave is done. What you gain in exchange is space. On a busy winter morning, when the line-up next door is packed, Mysteries often has only a handful of surfers in the water.
The spot starts to break at around 0.8 m, but it only really comes alive between roughly 1.1 and 2.4 m. In that range the wave has enough push to give a steep take-off and a clean shoulder. Below it, sections can be slow and inconsistent. Above about 3.2 m it becomes messy and dangerous, with the rocks playing a much bigger part, and there are better options along the coast.

Like the other Taghazout points, Mysteries needs a proper groundswell to work well. A period of at least 9 seconds is the minimum; short, choppy wind swell tends to break without shape here. It is not sheltered from the north wind, so the classic session is early in the morning, before the trade wind picks up, with a light ENE offshore grooming the faces. Tide matters more here than at many spots nearby: around mid tide is the sweet spot, while the extremes can make the wave either sluggish or too shallow over the rocks.
Who should surf Mysteries?
Mysteries is an intermediate-plus wave. You should be comfortable paddling out through white water on your own, taking off on steeper faces, turning along a green wall and, just as importantly, reading where the rocks are.
- Beginners: this is not your spot yet. The rocky bottom and fast take-off leave very little margin for error. You will learn far more, and far more safely, on the beach breaks at Tamraght or Crocro.
- Improvers: if you can already ride green waves along the face on a beach break, a small, clean day at Mysteries can be a good first step onto reef, ideally with a guide who can show you the take-off zone and the exit.
- Intermediate and advanced surfers: this is a useful spot to have in your pocket, especially when Anchor Point is crowded. Expect shorter rides but more waves per hour.
Hazards and local tips
- Rocks everywhere. Paddle out and come in where others do, and watch a few sets from the shore first. Booties can help, particularly at lower tides.
- Sea urchins live on the reef. Avoid walking on the rocks barefoot and do not put your feet down if you can help it.
- Timing the exit matters as much as timing the take-off. Wait for a lull and go in with the white water, not against a set.
- Currents can pull you along the point towards Anchor on bigger days. Keep checking your position against a marker on land.
- Respect the line-up. It is a small peak, so one surfer per wave, no snaking, and give local surfers the respect you would expect at your home break. Our guide to surf etiquette covers the basics.
- Know your limit. If it looks bigger than you are used to, it probably is. Watching from the rocks is never a wasted session.
How to get to Mysteries
Mysteries is about 15 minutes by car from our riad in Tamraght. You drive north along the coast road through Taghazout village; the spot is at the northern edge of town, right beside Anchor Point, so the two are usually checked together. From Agadir it is a little further along the same road. There is no need to hike, but the approach to the water is over rock, so take care with your board and your footing.
When to go
The season runs from October to April, when North Atlantic swells arrive regularly with the long periods Mysteries needs. In summer it is often too small, and the beach breaks are the better choice. Water is around 17 to 18°C through winter and early spring, so a 4/3 wetsuit is the right call; in autumn a 3/2 is usually enough. Go early: mornings are generally the cleanest before the north wind arrives, and if you can line up that early window with mid tide, you have found the best Mysteries has to offer.
